Safety First! IESL Conducts Examinations Following Government Imposed COVID-19 Prevention Measures

By PUBLICITY DIVISION (IESL)

Adopting the ‘New Normal’ where we have to get on with our day to day work following the COVID-19 mitigation measures, The Institution of Engineers has set an example by conducting their examinations starting from today.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has caused an unprecedented crisis in all areas. In the field of education, this emergency has led to the massive closure of face-to-face activities of educational institutions in more than 190 countries to prevent the spread of the virus and mitigate its impact. Sri Lanka has faced the same fate as any other country and the continuation was heavily disrupted.

The near-total closures of schools, universities, and colleges worldwide have reshaped nearly every aspect of normal life. Based on UNESCO data, more than a billion students were thrown into very uncertain waters as the pandemic put a halt to in-person classes and courses. From primary schools to PhD programs, students across the globe are experiencing the altering effects of coronavirus as classrooms move online and course curriculums stretch into the summer. Both students and teachers have been burdened with the task of adapting to an online learning environment seemingly overnight. As well, many parents have been forced to take on the role of IT technician, teacher, and babysitter as kids remain stuck at home. Although the stark consequences of COVID-19 have thrown both families and the education industry for a loop, the sudden switch to digital learning has brought with it a few valuable lessons. The future of education has been transformed to not only accommodate online classrooms but embrace a digital education.

Even though the COVID-19 was heavily influencing our day to day routine, we have to live with it until we find a cure. Therefore, we are unable to skip certain activities of our lives. Classroom lectures may be conducted online via different platforms but still conducting examinations has become a major issue. Most of the institutions have postponed their examinations due to the magnitude of the situation. But these activities directly affect the students. They are unable to graduate unless they sit for the final examinations. This is a huge drawback to their carrier development.

Balancing the situation were not postponing the examinations due to COVID-19 and considering the safety of Students and Staff members, the IESL education committee has taken a valiant step to conduct the IESL General Qualifying Examination and IESL Part I/II/III examinations in the coming weeks.

In this endeavor, government-imposed safety measures such as social distance, mandatory face masks, hand sanitization, temperature check, and other measures were strictly followed.
